The VIOLET EU Project is moving forward in its mission to modernise the training of International/European Welding Engineers (I/EWE) through digital learning and Extended Reality (XR).
Funded under the Erasmus+ programme, VIOLET brings together six European partners from the fields of welding, vocational education, qualification systems and immersive technologies. The project aims to introduce a more flexible, modular and industry-aligned approach to welding engineering education by combining e-learning with Augmented and Virtual Reality training experiences.
During the first months of the project, the consortium focused on understanding current training needs and analysing the state of XR technologies in welding and engineering education. As part of this work, the project published its State-of-the-Art Report on XR Tools for I/EWE Training, coordinated by Augmented Training Services / Seabery. The study examined existing AR, VR and Mixed Reality solutions, their potential for engineering education and the challenges that still need to be addressed for their wider adoption.
VIOLET has also started bringing its work to the international welding community, including its participation at the 79th International Institute of Welding Annual Assembly in Salzburg, where the consortium presented its plans for e-learning, XR-supported practical training and future pilot activities.
From Research to XR Development
The project has now reached an important new stage. On 22–23 September 2026, the VIOLET partners met in Seville for the second Transnational Project Meeting, hosted by ATS / Seabery.
Following nine months of research and analysis, the consortium is entering Work Package 3 (WP3), the core digital development phase. During the meeting, partners selected the Competence Units from the updated I/EWE curriculum that will serve as the foundation for new e-learning content and theoretical assessment resources, while defining the roadmap for the coming months.
The next steps will combine welding expertise, digital learning and Extended Reality to create new learning resources and immersive training scenarios for welding engineers.
For Seabery, participating in VIOLET represents another opportunity to contribute its experience in simulation and immersive learning to the evolution of welding education, working alongside leading European organisations to explore how XR can make advanced technical training more flexible, practical and aligned with the future needs of industry.
